ST LUCIA

WHERE ESTUARY MEETS OCEAN

St Lucia sits beside the enormous St Lucia estuarine system and provides access to the Indian Ocean along the southern section of iSimangaliso.

From here, an Ocean Explore Safari takes you away from the sheltered waterways and into the open marine environment. Depending on conditions and season, you may encounter dolphins, whales, turtles, seabirds and other marine life.

SODWANA BAY

WHERE THE REEF BEGINS

Sodwana Bay is internationally recognised for its coral reefs and extraordinary marine biodiversity. The same warm Indian Ocean that attracts divers and underwater explorers creates a rich offshore environment above the surface too. KOSI BAY

WHERE WILDERNESS ENDURES

In the northern reaches of iSimangaliso, Kosi Bay is a world of interconnected lakes, wetlands, coastal forest and ocean. It offers a quieter relationship with the northern coastline and a very different sense of place.

DOLPHINS

Dolphins are among the most exciting encounters possible offshore. Pods may be seen travelling, feeding or moving through the water around the boat.

When dolphins choose to approach naturally, the encounter can become one of the defining moments of the safari.

HUMPBACK WHALES

During their annual migration, humpback whales travel along the KwaZulu-Natal coastline. They may surface, travel, breach or appear quietly on the horizon.

Whales are possible on an Ocean Explore Safari, but this is not a dedicated whale-watching experience.

SEA TURTLES

Loggerhead and leatherback turtles are part of the wider marine ecosystem of iSimangaliso, with the protected beaches also forming important nesting habitat.

Seeing a turtle offshore is a genuine wild encounter — never a scheduled one.

RAYS, FISH & MARINE LIFE

The warm waters support an enormous variety of marine species. Depending on location and conditions, you may encounter rays, reef fish, pelagic fish, turtles, sharks and other marine life.

SEABIRDS & LIFE ABOVE THE WATER

Don't only look at the horizon. Look up. Seabirds can reveal where fish are feeding beneath the surface.

A sudden change in bird behaviour can sometimes tell you more about what is happening underwater than the water itself.
