iSimangaliso Wetland Park is a protected coastal and wetland landscape in northern KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

Stretching for more than 200 kilometres along the Indian Ocean, the park protects an extraordinary meeting of marine, estuarine, freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems.

It was South Africa's first UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 1999 in recognition of its exceptional biodiversity, ecological processes and remarkable combination of landscapes and habitats.

But the statistics only tell part of the story.

For us, iSimangaliso is best understood as a place where water connects everything.

Freshwater flows into lakes. Tides move through estuaries.

Dunes hold back the ocean. Wetlands become nurseries for wildlife.

And offshore, the coastline opens into the Indian Ocean.

If you're staying in St Lucia, you can experience the estuary, lake and ocean without travelling far.

With more time, you can begin connecting the different landscapes of the park.

Continue north towards Sodwana Bay for the coral reefs and marine environment.

Travel further towards Kosi Bay for its interconnected waterways and northern coastal landscapes.

Think less about ticking off attractions and more about following the geography.
