iSimangaliso's marine environment includes deep offshore water, reefs, currents and seasonal movements of baitfish and larger predators.

That creates an ever-changing fishing ground.

Depending on season, sea conditions, water temperature and where the bait is moving, you may encounter:

DORADO

Fast, aggressive and spectacularly colourful game fish often associated with floating debris, current lines and productive offshore water.

YELLOWFIN TUNA

Powerful, fast and built for a serious fight. Yellowfin are among the fish that make offshore fishing on this coastline such a physical experience.

KING MACKEREL (COUTA)

Known locally as Couta these are fast predators that can hit hard and run even harder.

WAHOO

Built for speed, wahoo are among the ocean's most explosive predators and can appear when conditions are right.

SAILFISH

One of the great pelagic game fish. Fast, powerful and unmistakable when that dorsal sail comes out of the water.

MARLIN

The big-game possibility. Marlin move through these waters, but they are never something we promise. Encountering one is about timing, conditions, bait movement and a fair amount of luck.

Once offshore, different techniques may be used depending on the target species and conditions.

TROLLING

Lines are worked behind the boat while moving through productive water. This can target species such as dorado, tuna, king mackerel, wahoo, sailfish and marlin.

LIVE BAIT

Where conditions and regulations allow, live bait can be an important part of targeting larger predators. The bait itself becomes part of the story — small fish attracting bigger fish further up the food chain.

LURE FISHING

Artificial lures allow the crew to cover water and target predatory game fish actively hunting in the upper layers.

THE WAIT

And then there is the part nobody can control. The rods are set. The ocean settles. The birds are watched.

Everyone waits. Then a reel screams. That moment is fishing.

You are entering one of the most biologically interesting stretches of coastline in South Africa.

DOLPHINS

Dolphins can sometimes appear around productive offshore water or travel alongside the boat.

HUMPBACK WHALES

During the annual migration, humpback whales travel along the KwaZulu-Natal coast.

This means a fishing trip during whale season can sometimes become something completely unexpected: a fishing charter with whales in the background.

SEA TURTLES

Loggerhead and leatherback turtles are associated with this coastline and wider marine ecosystem.

SEABIRDS

Birds can be beautiful to watch — but for an angler they can also be useful. A concentration of seabirds can reveal where baitfish are schooling.

FLYING FISH

Watch the water carefully and you may see flying fish skimming astonishing distances above the surface.

A seabird feeding frenzy can indicate baitfish close to the surface. And where baitfish gather, predatory game fish may not be far away.

Sometimes the birds find the fish before the fishermen do.

02 — DORADO ARE NATURAL COLOUR CHANGERS

Dorado can display extraordinary blue, green and gold colours when excited.

Their colouring can change dramatically depending on their state.

03 — WAHOO ARE SPEED MACHINES

Wahoo are among the fastest fish in the ocean. Their streamlined bodies and powerful jaws make them highly effective open-water predators.

04 — TUNA ARE BUILT DIFFERENTLY

Tuna are highly adapted for sustained swimming and spend much of their lives constantly moving through the ocean.

That is one reason fighting one can be such a physical experience.

05 — MARLIN DON'T LIVE IN ONE SPOT

Marlin are highly migratory pelagic predators. They move through huge areas of ocean following prey and favourable water conditions.

06 — THE AGULHAS CURRENT MATTERS

The warm Agulhas Current is one of the defining oceanographic features of South Africa's east coast. It helps create the warm-water conditions associated with the exceptional marine biodiversity of this region.

07 — FISHING HERE ISN'T UNREGULATED

You are fishing within the iSimangaliso marine environment, where fishing is subject to specific regulations, permitted species, zones and conservation measures.

The rules are part of protecting the fishery for the future.

The offshore recreational fishery within iSimangaliso is managed through specific regulations.

Certain species are permitted while others are protected.

Bottom fishing is restricted and recreational offshore fishing focuses on permitted pelagic game fish.

Fishing is also subject to designated areas, permits and applicable regulations.

We fish with the ecosystem, not against it.
