    The waterways of iSimangaliso have always been routes of movement and survival.

    Long before modern tourism, local communities travelled these lakes and coastal waters to fish, trade and connect with neighbouring settlements.

    Today, these same waterways offer a different perspective of the World Heritage Site.

    Travelling by boat allows you to observe wildlife with minimal disturbance, access landscapes that cannot be reached by road and experience the changing moods of the estuary and wetlands from the water.

    This is why we describe our experiences as boat-safaris.

    The boat is simply the means of travel.

    The safari is the experience of observing a living ecosystem unfold around you.

    Crocodiles become silhouettes along the shoreline and hippos begin gathering before their nightly movements onto land.

    This is not simply a boat trip timed to catch the sunset.

    A LIVING WETLAND SYSTEM

    AROUND 800 HIPPOS

    The St Lucia estuarine system is commonly estimated to support around 800 hippos.

    This is an approximate population figure rather than a fixed census. Wildlife populations naturally change, and different sources may use different geographic boundaries when referring to the St Lucia system.

    AROUND 1,200 NILE CROCODILES

    Approximately 1,200 Nile crocodiles are commonly cited for the St Lucia estuarine system.

    Again, this should be understood as an estimate rather than an exact current headcount.

    A WORLD HERITAGE LANDSCAPE

    iSimangaliso Wetland Park was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999.

    The Park protects an extraordinary mosaic of marine, coastal, wetland, estuarine, freshwater and terrestrial environments.

    WATER CONNECTS IT ALL

    Lakes, estuaries, wetlands, coastal forests, beaches and the Indian Ocean form part of a much larger interconnected landscape.

    The St Lucia waterways are one part of this living system.

  • AS THE LIGHT CHANGES SO DOES THE ESTUARY

    As temperatures begin to fall, the mood of the estuary shifts.

    Birds make their final movements before nightfall.

    Crocodiles remain almost motionless along the shoreline, relying on camouflage and patience.

    Hippos gather in the water before beginning their nightly grazing.

    And above it all, the changing sky is reflected across the surface of the estuary.

    Every evening is different.

    Sometimes the wildlife steals the show. Sometimes it is simply the beauty of being on the water as another day comes to an end.

    A LITTLE MORE ABOUT THE WILDLIFE

    Hippos spend much of the daylight hours in or around water and generally leave the water to graze at night. Their increasing activity towards evening is therefore part of a natural daily rhythm.

    Nile crocodiles can remain remarkably still along the shoreline.

    From a boat, something that initially looks like a log can suddenly reveal itself as a large crocodile.

    The wildlife is not performing for us.

    We are simply entering their environment and observing what is happening.

    ST LUCIA

    Around St Lucia, the waterways create a remarkable setting for an evening boat safari.

    As the light softens, the estuary and surrounding wetlands take on a completely different character.

    You may encounter hippos, crocodiles, waterbirds and other wildlife, but sightings depend on where the animals are and what they are doing that evening.

    Sometimes the wildlife is the highlight. Sometimes it is the light, the silence or the sheer scale of the landscape.

    You never quite know what the evening will bring.

    THE WILD DETAIL

    The St Lucia estuarine system supports an estimated population of around 800 hippos and approximately 1,200 Nile crocodiles.

    These animals are part of a functioning wetland ecosystem rather than attractions placed there for visitors.

    That is precisely why their behaviour and location can never be guaranteed.

    KOSI BAY

    Kosi Bay offers another side of iSimangaliso Wetland Park.

    Its interconnected lakes, channels, wetlands and coastal environments form an intricate water landscape closely connected to the Indian Ocean and to the communities who have lived alongside these waterways for generations.

    As evening arrives, the waterways become quieter and the changing light reveals another side of this coastal wilderness.

    A Sunset Lake Safari here is about experiencing that transition from day into evening from the water.
