    KWAZULU-NATAL

    EXPLORE BOAT SAFARIS
    PLAN YOUR EXPERIENCE
  • EVERY EXPERIENCE

    BEGINS WITH THE WATER

Some journeys begin as the first light touches the St Lucia Estuary. Others lead beyond the shoreline into the Indian Ocean, following whales along the Elephant Coast or exploring the marine waters of Sodwana Bay.

St Lucia Charters offers boat safaris and marine experiences that connect you with the waterways of iSimangaliso Wetland Park and the wild coast of northern KwaZulu-Natal. From quiet estuary cruises with hippos and crocodiles to seasonal whale watching and ocean exploration, each experience offers a different way to read the landscape from the water.

Choose your experience and explore iSimangaliso Wetland Park from the water.

    FROM THE WATER

The waters around St Lucia bring together an extraordinary mix of estuary, wetland and ocean.

On the St Lucia Estuary, hippos, crocodiles and waterbirds move through a living ecosystem shaped by tides and seasons. Beyond the shoreline, the Indian Ocean opens onto a coastline visited by whales, dolphins, turtles and seabirds.

Our boat safaris are designed to experience these places as they are — with knowledgeable local skippers and guides, small groups where possible, and an understanding that wildlife follows its own rhythm.

  • OUR BOAT SAFARIS

    & MARINE EXPERIENCES

Choose your experience according to the season, weather, time available and what you would most like to see.

From quiet wildlife cruises on the St Lucia Estuary to seasonal whale watching and ocean exploration along the Elephant Coast, each experience offers a different perspective of this remarkable water-based landscape.

Wildlife is never scripted. Conditions change, animals move and every departure is different. Our skippers and guides work with the water, weather and season to give you the best experience possible on the day..

    SUNRISE LAKE SAFARI

Start the day on the St Lucia Estuary as the light comes across the wetlands. The early morning is a beautiful time to be on the water, with hippos returning to deeper water, crocodiles warming along the banks and birdlife becoming increasingly active. The experience is unhurried and focused on observing the estuary as it wakes up around you.

    Location: St Lucia Estuary
    Experience: Estuary wildlife and birding
    Departure: Morning
    Duration: Approximately 3 hours

    SUNSET LAKE SAFARI

As the afternoon begins to soften, head onto the St Lucia Estuary and watch the landscape change with the light. Hippos become more active, crocodiles can often be seen along the shoreline and the birdlife of the wetlands provides a constant soundtrack. It is a slower way to experience the estuary before evening settles over the water.

    Location: St Lucia Estuary
    Experience: Estuary wildlife and birding
    Departure: Afternoon
    Duration: Approximately 2 hours

    WHALE WATCH SAFARI

During the annual whale migration, the waters along the Elephant Coast become a seasonal highway for humpback whales travelling along South Africa's Indian Ocean coastline.

Our whale watch experience takes you offshore from St Lucia to search for whales and other marine life, with the open ocean becoming part of the safari.

Sightings are dependent on nature and sea conditions, but the experience is about more than ticking off a species. It is about being out on the ocean during one of the great seasonal movements of wildlife along the KwaZulu-Natal coast.

Location: St Lucia • Indian Ocean
    Season: Seasonal whale migration
    Duration: Approximately 2–3 hours

    OCEAN EXPLORE SAFARI

Leave the estuary behind and experience the Indian Ocean from a different perspective.

The Ocean Explore Safari follows the coastline and offshore waters around St Lucia in search of marine life, including dolphins, whales, turtles, seabirds and other wildlife that may pass through these waters.

The ocean is always changing. Weather, swell, tides and marine activity influence each departure, making every trip a little different. Your skipper and guide read the conditions on the day and take you where the water gives the best opportunity to experience the coast.

Location: St Lucia • Indian Ocean
Experience: Marine wildlife and coastal exploration
    Duration: Approximately 3 hours

    DEEP SEA FISHING

For those who would rather spend their time with a line in the water, our deep sea fishing experiences head offshore into the productive waters of the Indian Ocean. The Elephant Coast is known for its rich marine environment and seasonal fishing opportunities, with conditions and target species changing throughout the year.

This is a genuine offshore experience rather than a guaranteed catch. Your skipper will work with the conditions, local knowledge and season to give you the best possible opportunity on the day.

    Experience: Offshore deep sea fishing
    Availability: Seasonal and weather dependent

    SCUBA DIVING IN SODWANA BAY

Further north along the Elephant Coast, Sodwana Bay offers a completely different experience of the Indian Ocean.

Beneath the surface are coral reefs, tropical fish and a remarkable variety of marine life, making the area one of South Africa's best-known diving destinations.

Our Sodwana Bay experiences connect you with this underwater world while keeping the focus on the marine environment that makes the coastline so special.

Experience: Coral reefs and marine life
    Activity: Scuba diving

  • WHY EXPLORE

    iSIMANGALISO BY BOAT?

There are few places where lakes, estuaries, coastal forests, wetlands, coral reefs and the Indian Ocean exist within one protected landscape. iSimangaliso Wetland Park is a place shaped by water, and experiencing it from the water gives you a perspective that is difficult to find from land.

From the St Lucia Estuary, where hippos, crocodiles and an extraordinary variety of birdlife inhabit the wetlands, to the open ocean where whales and dolphins move along the coast, every experience reveals another part of this interconnected ecosystem.

We don't script wildlife sightings or promise that nature will perform on schedule. Our skippers and guides read the weather, tides, water conditions and animal behaviour and work with what the day gives us.

The boat is the way in.

    The safari is the experience.

  • MORE THAN A BOAT TRIP

We call these experiences boat safaris because the boat is simply the way we enter the environment. The safari is the experience of observing a living ecosystem as it unfolds around you.

On the St Lucia Estuary, that might mean watching a pod of hippos surface beside the boat, seeing a crocodile resting quietly along the shoreline or stopping to identify one of the many birds that inhabit the wetlands.

Out on the Indian Ocean, the experience changes again — whales, dolphins, turtles and seabirds move through a much bigger landscape shaped by wind, swell, tides and season.

We don't script wildlife sightings or promise that nature will perform on schedule. Our skippers and guides use local knowledge and experience to read the conditions and make the most of what the day offers.

The boat is the way in.

    The safari is the experience.

  • OUR PHILOSOPHY

    IS GUIDED BY NATURE

We believe the best wildlife experiences leave room for nature to be nature. There are no guarantees in a living ecosystem, and we don't believe in promising wildlife sightings on demand.

Instead, we work with the conditions of the day.

Wind, tides, weather, season and animal behaviour all influence what happens on the water.

Our skippers and guides bring local knowledge and experience, but ultimately the environment sets the pace.

Sometimes the most memorable part of a safari is the wildlife you find. Sometimes it is the quiet of the water, the changing light, a flock of birds lifting from the reeds or simply seeing the coastline from a completely different perspective.

You are not watching a performance.

You are entering a living landscape.

  • THREE WATER WORLDS

    ALONG THE ELEPHANT COAST

St Lucia Charters operates across some of the most distinctive waterways and marine environments of northern KwaZulu-Natal. St Lucia, Sodwana Bay and Kosi Bay each offer a completely different relationship with water, wildlife and the coast.

    ST LUCIA & THE ESTUARY

St Lucia sits beside the vast St Lucia Estuary within iSimangaliso Wetland Park. This is the heart of our boat safari experiences, where freshwater and marine influences meet and hippos, crocodiles and an extraordinary variety of birdlife share the waterways. Estuary cruises offer a close view of this living wetland without taking you away from the natural rhythm of the place.

SODWANA BAY & THE INDIAN OCEAN

Further north, Sodwana Bay opens onto a very different marine environment. Coral reefs, tropical fish and rich underwater habitats make the area particularly important for scuba diving and marine exploration. Here the safari continues beneath the surface, revealing another side of the Indian Ocean and the wider iSimangaliso coastline.

    KOSI BAY & THE LAKES

Near the northern end of the Elephant Coast, Kosi Bay is a network of interconnected lakes, channels, coastal forest and estuarine waterways close to the Mozambique border. Its landscapes and traditional fishing culture offer another perspective on the relationship between people, water and the natural environment.
